Being fast is the key to choosing your battles. If you are a mercenary and you see the merchants of an enemy faction, they can be good pickings as long as you can defeat their strong escorts. There are times you can herd them into places they can't retreat from you, but usually it's a while before you can outrun them.
Even an mercenary working for a kingdom cannot -- despite the fact that adding parties led by your own companions doesn't cost influence. Being king of your own lets you form an army, but in order for you to have formed a kingdom you need a fief (e.g. one of Imperial culture if you're going along the Imperial quest line), so chicken/egg problem.
I started the siege and this guy showed up and is just sitting here. At this rate he’s gonna starve us out. I’ve been waiting 2 weeks in game since they hit 0 food. 182. 28. I've been playing as a mercenary, not a full vassal, of several kingdoms, but if I ever try to leave a kingdom, I take a -40 relations penalty with….
Steward skill - don't make my mistake! Bannerlord. Make sure you have at least 1 focus point assigned to the Steward skill in the early game, unless of course your character starts with some learning rate already. I thought I'd leave the skill alone as I was just being a mercenary and didn't need to own any settlements.
Spend your influence to support them when there are new fiefs, if you have a good source of influence you'll max their relationship easily. Leaving with your fiefs will only take 40 relationship so no problem. But before becoming a vassal you'd want to raise your clan tier to at least 4 in order to get more fiefs. yaz213.
Battanian = fian champions in vast numbers with a (15-20) strong group of cav to screen enemy cav and help the archers maintain distance from infantry. Scale up as needed. Use a companion to field another group heavy with infantry or whatever you need more of and always have them in your army for 0 influence.
Now as for the original question, Idk man, mercenary is fun once you reach tier 2 or still tier 3 maybe even 4, mercenary status is the quickest best way to make money while also leveling most of your character skills, you join whatever faction is in war with a faction you don`t mind screwing with and also have a lot of prosperity so you can go
One of the benefits of not being a vassal or a mercenary and of not having your own kingdom is that no one attacks you. To me, that is a fair trade-off for not being able to create armies. You should be able to take a fief on your own. Just watch for a fief that has recently changed hands and has no garrison or militia to speak of.
